Founder & Designer / 2016

Designed and built for those who call the river home, the Flows iOS app allows anglers, kayakers, and others in the whitewater community to monitor the rivers they care about.

The challenge was to present historically cumbersome and dense information into a meaningful interface for a passionate user group. While there was already competition in the space, the opportunity to simplify the experience and create a more valuable tool was evident.

The entire application was meant to answer a single question:

Should I go to the river today?

Should I go to the river today?

Experimenting to get traction

Experimenting to get traction

In 2016 I felt compelled to create a better experience and launch something of my own. As the founder and sole designer, I treated the entire project as a series of experiments, each with a set of hypotheses that needed to be tested.

The challenge was not only defining what success looked like at each stage of the project but determining what questions I needed to answer before moving forward with confidence.

Test 1: Initial Survey

Did the problem exist as I saw it? What assumptions was I making? Surveys in online forums helped surface the largest problems.

Test 2: Low Fidelity Prototypes

Did this solution solve the problem? What parts of the design needed to change? Paper prototyping shed some much-needed light on these questions.

Test 3: Landing Page

Did users value this solution? Did they care enough to sign up pre-launch? A website was quickly launched to track conversion rates and build a beta group.

Test 4: Launch

What were users saying? Why were they abandoning? What needed to change? Analytics, reviews, and email feedback set the course for future updates and releases.

Impressions

After partnering with a developer to bring this concept to life, I was able to spend a considerable amount of time speaking with both users and paying customers to better understand how this app fit into their routines. Launching a product is incredibly tough, but receiving positive customer feedback certainly makes it all worth it.

"Love the simplicity of this app, great job."

"Love the app. Awesome to see one with a quick view of all my rivers."

"Just downloaded your app and love it. It's perfect to see if I'm able to get out on the river."
